It required us a long time to read this book, not due to writing, but due to exceptional writing. The guide is full of gems that you'll want to highlight, not to mention the numerous tested recipes that make me wish I had the physical guide and never the Kindle version. To those who want to cook--especially desserts--get the hardcover guide!
David writes straight out there as to what it's like for an American with a smattering of French language skills to pick upwards and move to France. He dove into the culture, the people, the area and made his own way. He admits to the mistakes he made and the corrective lessons the French were only too happy to provide.
If you feel a relocation is in your future, I'd say to read this guide and ponder what likely to really be up against--and the delightful gifts likely to receive.
Here's a estimate from close to the finish of the book: " What helped was that I understand the food and tried out my best to conform to the culture, somewhat than wanting to make the culture adapt to me. More important, though, I learned to take the time to get to know people, especially the vendors and merchants, who would patiently make clear their wares to me. "
He's all about learning and learning some more and waking up the very next day to learn again. Plus there's a lesson we all need to cling to., David Lebovitz is an American pastry chef who moved to Paris, france and decided to blog about his encounters in France. I need to admit, however, that I was initially drawn to the book due to beautiful croissant on the cover. I had never heard of Lebovitz before this book. “The Fairly sweet Life in Paris” is a group vignettes centered on blogs by David Lebovitz. With this short and enjoyable book, he informs us about his daily life in Paris: the rude Parisians, the daily manifestations under his windows in the Bastille portion of town, the honking sides, the horrible coffee. Still, it’s not all bad. Additionally, there are the outdoor indicators, the baguettes, and the chocolate. There is so much chocolate! And it also all sounded delightful. The guide also includes recipes after each vignette and, let me tell you, some of the tested recipes sound delicious. I have not tried making anything yet, but I most definitely will. And despite all the cranky Parisians depicted in the book, it still made me want to go to Paris., I really enjoyed this book. David produces of life in Paris, france and of the character of the French and he brought back so many great memories of my life there in the 1950's. A benefit is actually all the wonderful tested recipes he adds to each chapter. I especially loved the humor with which he tells his history of exactly where he lived before arriving in Paris and the many adjustments he's made to become a true Parisienne. He learned to entice his way into their hearts with his homemade ice cream, and he found that a slightly different pronunciation of a France word could possibly get him into trouble. This specific book is great to read., OH! I totally loved reading this guide. Not only is full of useful information and tasty and simplified recipies but the way David writes, with such wit and wit made me read his book few times and always before falling in bed so I will have a last laugh before shutting my eyes!!, I really like the author! He is hilarious and he includes a great deal of recipes in his book. He explains the culture and people of Paris and where to purchase food in Paris, france. Absolutely essential read if you plan on visiting Paris, france and if you love baking! I plan on buying more books from this author in the future. I really like him!, Famous dessert chef David Lebovitz shares entertaining well-written vignettes and tasty recipes (ofcourse not just for dessert) in this travel tome for foodies and francophiles. When you're familiar with his blog, and love it, make sure to pick up this guide. Expats living abroad will find his anecdotes about moving to Paris especially amusing--I know I performed, even though I'm an American surviving in Barcelona, not Paris. He includes lots of substitutions for at home cooks that don't live in France, and clear instructions. The only issue i had developed at all was that on my kindle application on the iPhone (not on the Kindle itself) the formatting was off and it was very difficult to see some of the ingredient lists as they divided themselves into two-letter lines., The writer made me feel like I was right there with him, providing me the vivid experience of a typical Parisian home kitchen, shopping style, and even the unique washing practices of the French. I got a feel for the why's of France attitude, esp. toward Us citizens, & the importance of learning the language. My trip to Paris will be enriched due to this book., I read this book less than a couple weeks after coming back from my first time in Paris. I think it was hilarious and interesting, which I think was its purpose. I have not tried any of the recipes and some of them looked a little strange in my opinion but I may necessarily have the most refined taste. i loved the techniques for where to get certain things and the frankness of life in Paris-it isn't perfect-just like everywhere else but it SURE is an excellent destination to visit. I love his sense if wit.
