I really enjoyed this story. I actually woke up early the other day morning and started reading it at about 4 in the morning. I actually read until I got to leave for work, and thought about the book all day while I was working… thinking what was coming next. Then when I got home I fell right back in and finished it.
I’m going to start by saying that I really liked Rowen, the MC in the story. He is a young man chucked out by his town because of some dilemma related to Rowen’s parents’ deaths, and Rowen dropping the power of speech. When he is ‘sacrificed’ by his village to bring rain and finish to the present heat wave, he or she is rescued by a Storm Lord named Kristoff and flown off to a secret island where the Storm Lords live and train.
Rowen has power, but not like anyone has ever seen before. Ok, so the majority of that has been in the blurb. Now let me discuss the story’s execution. I actually think the author do a good job in describing and building the details of Rowen’s odd power, building to an ending where all is revealed. But, in fact it is a huge but, like another book I read and reviewed from this author, the grand finale happens in like the last 5% or so of the book, and is all neatly wrapped up in a very short “five years later” epilogue. I desired more. There was so much potential story between the last page of the full story and the first page of the turn that I felt a little cheated. There could easily be an complete book there.
I very much liked the storyline and I’m recommending it to anyone who likes an alternate world type story with a downtrodden MC who fights to be understood. Others might think it is complete and does not need any more to the story, let me understand what you think when you read it., A Spread Thoughts and Rogue Phrases Review (An Alisa Review)
Rating: 4. 5 stars out of 5 -rounded up to 5
The heat took everything from Rowen: his parents, his voice when the local cure for heatstroke poisoned him, and the trust of his fellow villagers, who branded him a water thief. It would have claimed his life when he was deemed unworthy of valuable resources and left in the sun to die, had not an unfamiliar man named Kristoff ridden in on the wind and advised Rowen he had power.
Rowen works hard to become a Storm Lord, one of a secret magical group that brings storms to break the heat surf overtaking their world. But Rowen is starting his training at a disadvantage since he cannot speak and is much older than the other novices. The desire to please Kristoff inspires him to persevere even more than the threat of being sent back to his village to die should he fall short. Still, he cannot accumulate rain, and when his capabilities manifest, they are unlike anything at all known to the Storm Lords. Unless Kristoff can help him control his deadly powers, the entire world will be in danger.
Kristoff might be among the mightiest of the Storm Lords, but he is never been a mentor before. For a opportunity to be with Rowen, he is willing to risk everything.
This was a wonderful and well thought out tale. This story takes place in a well thought out world that noises similar to earth but with some very big differences. Rowen’s life has recently been very harsh when Kristoff rescues him and hopes that he may finally be able to help out his home town, if even from a distance.
Rowen works hard to master his capabilities but what he feels isn’t quite what Kristoff and the other Storm Lords describe. His / her lack of ability to communicate easily causes some of the problems and also retains himself separate from those around him. Kristoff isn’t sure what to do with his new charge but is willing to do his part of being a mentor. Their feelings grow but both don’t want to cause any problems and don’t let their feelings known until it’s almost too late.
This tale is told from both MCs points of view and we are able to understand their thoughts and emotions. Rowen works so hard to become what Kristoff said he was but when they find out how his forces really work his safety and that of those around him is put at chance. Kristoff tries to refuse how he is experience about Rowan and can not help but be even more protective of Rowan as he works with him. I felt for Rowan when he was suddenly taken from his home and all he has actually known to a new and foreign place and when he or she fears that he can cause harm to others with his powers. I cherished seeing Kristoff actually learn about how the choices for their world are made but he or she wants to make it better with Rowan.
Include art by Aaron Anderson is absolutely ideal for this story., Rowen, 19 years-old, lived in a town in the middle of the desert in which the warmth spells were the most severe. His parents died to a pretty hard warmth spell, and he lost his voice at that same times. A year later, his village chose to sacrifice Rowen to the heat spell in order to accept the Storm God. Rowen was left, bonded and naked in the wilderness.
Kristoff, 21 years-old, was the youngest and the most powerful Storm God alive. After breaking a heat spell, Kristoff was flying to his island when he sensed forces below him. He landed in the desert and located Rowen practically dead.
Kristoff decided to take Rowen with him, as an apprentice to become a future Tornado Lord.
I LOVED THIS BOOK.
Rowen is so adorable, smart, naïve and heartbreaking. He tries very hard to learn how to write and read for Kristoff and being able to communicate with others. He's a real heart, he truly wants to help others and save lives. He’s so strong, physically but psychologically too, despite all he is been through, he still wants to be a Storms Lord and save his village (the same village that tried to murder him in a ritual sacrifice! ).
I actually loved the storyline, I found it very original, how the world suffers from hard heat spells, what’s happening to the planet, and how human beings try to survive. Besides, everything in this book about heat spells and the Storm Lords—how they bring lightning, hurricanes, or thunder or wind storms and just how they utilize it to break those masses of heat, are real. I actually mean, it’s well explained, and it’s scientifically true, this book taught me personally some points that I’ve never understood at school. (Science wasn’t my thing).
The love story between Kristoff and Rowen was fairly sweet, beautiful, and well built. I loved how they were together as mentor and student, and then they slowly became a little more like friends, however the more time they spend together, the more the warmth between them gets older until it consumes them.
The sole little tiny thing i can say was that sometimes, it was a little too long with too much detail, but really, it’s nothing in comparison to how the book is great, and the character types are adorable.
It was a very good book i enjoyed a great deal and it’s the perfect read for a hot summer day, with that, you will be completely immersed in the tale.
