Superb book about finish of life decisions, care, conversations and how to love and connect. I read this for a medical social work class but it is a really interesting read if you are old, dying, or know someone who is. Created by a physician that has a real heart for his patients., I'm the sort of person whose eyes commence to glaze over if I try to absorb many webpages of social science/self help type writing. I had been steered to this book once i was helping my mommy as she died. I had formed so little experience with death which i worried about doing the wrong thing. As I read the stories I had been drawn in, absorbing each small " message" with each tale. One, about a man whose final present to his family was to allow them help him as he died, touched myself so deeply I read it to a mother in her last days. I actually wish I'd read this book earlier but I avoid think it could ever be too late., I actually believe Dr. Byock, MARYLAND defines death, and several of the things you go through very explicid. Which I believe is a good thing, because most medical Dr's don't want to even go that route. They don't want to " loose the battle ", when in all actual reality You're the one loosing the battle, if that's what you would like to call it. This individual finally sees people and patients for who and what they are. We have read many of the other books mentioned in the book, so I actually could understand early on, where he was approaching from. I believe A Must Read.... and then for him to write down Questions and responses, and places to go to be treated is a large plus. Thanks Dr. Byock for your wealth of Information! Debbie Feighner/Fort Wayne, WITHIN, This is written by a hospice doctor, giving us all the advantage of his years of experience with the dying. The outstanding part of this book is his example of individual patients and their families during the saga of death. Many a chapter brought holes to my eyes. Plus it also reads like a mystery story in that you turn the next page to see what is going to happen next. On the finish of the book is an invaluable FAQ section (that was worth the cost by itself).

I purchased the book in order to understand how to better relate with family members who have the big Chemical. I had been looking for some understanding of what they might be feeling and the way to talk to them, things which i might do to simplicity their mental anguish somewhat than add to it by inept, uncaring action. This book offers in all respects and is one you may re-read from time to time for the striking insights.

Almost all of us have been in the process of dying, some of us are just closer than others - keep that in thoughts and buy this book., I actually am currently enrolled in a training course on Death, Dying and Bereavement as part of my Bachelor's of Nursing curriculum. This guide was required reading for the course, and I feel forever grateful. Although We have had some limited contact with hospice nursing, I was wholly
unsuspecting for the sweeping range and loving presentation provided by Doctor Byock. He is the " man who knows" when it comes to hospice, and has seen quite a lot. His present as a wordsmith, and ability to position these very tender and sometimes painful moments within reach of your understanding, was pure pleasure to me. Reading " Dying Well" brought myself, with ease, to the beginning of what I know will be a very long road of proposal for those making very difficult finish of life decisions., Beginning with his father, Byock tells tales of the deaths of a number of people, most of whom he met through hospice care in Montana. I found these tales enriching. Byock discovered that living well tends to get ready one for dying well, although some people, once faced with their mortality, surprise those about them with the capacity to perish well. Byock emphasizes allowing those who love the dying person to be their practical caretakers when they want to and when possible - keeping them warm, dry, clean, helping with food and elimination. Mostly just being with them, bearing experience to their pain and sorrow, listening to the stories of the life, and remembering the storyplot of their passing. He has noticed that this arrangement can ease the grieving process for those left and the dying process for those dying., I have terminal cancer. I desired to find information that would assist as well as my children through the approaching months and I found a great deal of it in this book. I cried throughout it however they were the great kind of tears. Personally i think much more equipped for the time when I need hospice services because I actually know more about what you should expect and what it is realistic ask for. This is so comforting to know that I will be able to get through this without extreme pain. My hubby will read it next and I'm sure it will help him too to know that it is okay to ask for things which he considers either of us need. I highly recommend this book for terminal patients and their families., This specific book has changed my perspective in my profession as well at my personal life. My face with dying and death has become more frequent as the years have gone by, and also this book has helped me to approach that subject (within my own mind and with others) with more clarity. Merely as most of us hesitate to consider things such as estate planning and superior directives, I have not wanted to look at this subject matter of dying until We have come in contact with it indirectly. With the reading of this book, I now will method the discussion of death and dying more proactively, as part of my learning to care for another inside my professional and personal life.
