Despite calling the disorder ATTENTION DEFICIT-HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER in the intro, he or she calls it ADD all through the rest of the book. Despite saying that ADHD impacts men and women in equal numbers in the intro, immediately after in the book he or she states that it impacts men three times more than women. The research he or she describes is largely from early nineties or before, regardless of the explosion of new ADHD research findings in the past 22 years (although there is up to date medication information).
This makes me angry because the author's grab for money in releasing an " updated" version of any book about a disorder that is hardly updated whatsoever is unacceptable and negligent. Clinicians and patients will read this inaccurate/unupdated information and never deliver or obtain the best treatment they could potentially have. Dr . Hallowell stresses in his book how drastically the disorder can negatively affect one's life and how important treatment is — yet he or she presents vastly outdated information and pretends it's new, performing a great disservice to ADHD sufferers like personally who wish to heal., I have struggled with ADD for a very long time. I use known for a little bit that I get it, but I had no idea how much of my life it affected. We found the stories of ADD at different age range very helpful, because We found myself in them for each and every stage of life and the struggles We encountered. Looking back, We realized that I feel not defective, I'm just built differently. I have learned innovative ways to connect with people, to strategy problems, and even how to look back on my life. I found a lot of healing within these pages.
I had a lot of pain growing up and thought there was something very wrong with me. This particular led to many instances of depression, self-esteem issues, taking once life ideation, isolation, anger, and self recrimination. Why could not I just set it up? Exactly why was I angry so often? (one story was particularly illuminating--in which the therapist asks the person WHY he has so much anger and he states it's from many years of built-up frustration. It made so much sense. ) Exactly why couldn't I stay inspired in school or work? Why am I so scattered and disorganized?
We was born in 80... ADHD research would still be in its infancy, and so my symptoms weren't identified. I remember one kid that was diagnosed as having it and everybody made fun of him or her and I was under the impression that it was an excuse. ?nternet site got into adulthood, We remember seeing a commercial for adult ADHD that put a name on what I was experiencing, but nevertheless tried to deny it was obviously a problem. This particular has had wide-ranging outcomes on my life i didn't even realize. Via this book, I have found that there is no shame in choosing to take medication or seeking out coaching or remedy. I have found a brand new appreciation for my creative ADHD brain and a way to approach awkward situations with humor so people can understand me better. I use also reached out to many people that I fear I could have alienated in my past or hurt with my impulsive conduct. I have rebuilt many bridges and mended friendships and even my family.
This is not a made-up disorder. It's not laziness and are not able to just be overcome by pure willpower. I've tried. We eventually run out of steam also it took so much effort to continue to keep it proceeding for so long that when I ran away of steam, my determination and willpower to do just about anything went out the window. I'm so grateful to the authors with this book. We found so many responses that I have already been looking for for too long. I didn't even realize this was the answer I was searching for, even though it was in front of my face for a very long time.
Thank you SO much for the detailed descriptions that describe how ADHD impacts ALL areas of life. Thank you also for the case histories i could connect to and seem like We wasn't alone. Excellent book and VERY highly recommended for sufferers of mature ADHD, or those that choose to be in relationship with someone that has it., Everything in my life makes sense now. Can be somewhat recurring, but I actually teared up reading some elements of this book because some of the stories and feelings written there were Just what I had been feeling at some point around me., This is " THE classic first choice book, the one which started out it all. Dr. Hallowell broke new ground with this book & helped to educate all the other MD's regarding/ understanding ADD/ ADHD., Necessary reading for anyone who has a family member or good friend non-compliant who has ATTENTION DEFICIT-HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER, Great book so much. Easy to follow along and the words just flow. The authors were smart to include real life case examples as well; it humanizes all the medical descriptions and jargon. Wish the authors lived close by because I like their approach to ADD/ADHD. I would definitely see them for my own struggles., It had been such an invaluable resource. It is written from the best viewpoint; that of individual company accounts that distinguish and distinguish how ADHD manifests. It really is a great begin to understanding what is and what is not ADHD. I feel We have a much better comprehension of my daughter after having read this. Pity on me for not reading it sooner!, Exactly what a great big attention opener of not only why I'm like We am but the impact that has on others. I enjoy all the tips on how to live, love and laugh even more with ADHD. A must read for ANYONE who has or loves someone with ADD/ADHD.
