This is a story about the darker faeries. It reminds me personally of Melissa Marr's Evil Lovely faeries. Capable of love and goodness, but tending towards their darker side, manipulating people and doing truly awful things. It's dark, almost gothic, but not set in a residence rather a town, and the darkest part of the forest. This is a place that can be familiar and foreign in an instant and both Hazel and her brother Ben have spent their childhood there fighting the evil animals that do evil things. Yet then they left.

The story starts with developed versions of Hazel and Ben and winds itself back to their child years. It isn't a pretty trip, in in a bad neighborhood, nor at home. But Hazel and Ben enjoy things and find their happiness in the stories they place about the boy in the glass coffin, the boy they both love. I can understand getting away into stories, especially illusion. But their faeries are real.

Fairfold is interesting, reminding me of a Southern town that sweeps the ugly bits behind closed doors. Keeps is actually secrets so that the tourists don't hear the stories, or if they do, they don't seem to be to care enough to prevent visiting the boy in the forest. The town makes a lot of business off of the tourists. The faeries are good for business so they never say anything about the changeling boy that lives with his brother, the one the faeries tried to steal. They never mind leaving milk and other gifts out for the faeries until someone breaks the boy out of the coffin. Right up until the attacks on the locals begin.

I love the way Holly Dark takes a simple story, a family story, and explores it on several different levels. The relationship between littermates, brother and sister, brother and brother, the partnership between parent and child- mother and children, daddy and children, and family.

Hazel is the narrator and she is no girl to be rescued. She is smart, brave, and loyal. Hazel loves the woman brother and Fairfold enough to sacrifice herself if need be. She jogged my memory very much of the character in BEWARE TYPICALLY THE WILD BY NATALIE PARKER, another girl that loved her brother so much, she went into a swamp to save the woman brother. This novel was just like atmospheric and placed me spellbound as I actually read.

It absolutely was refreshing to see a LGBT figure or more that were just characters, complete characters, no stereotyping. So avoid think of this being an issue book. It isn't very. Imagine, a book with diverse characters and it isn't an issue publication. How lovely!

I recommend this novel to fans of faerie tales, relationships, family stories, This is a great story with a lot of action, a lot of unique fae, and some interesting retellings of old tales. Holly Black includes some of her sources in the back and a unique set of authors in the woman acknowledgements. There is some violence in the story, not gratuitous but this is the fae in what some would call their truer form. These are teens so the typical teen shenanigans happening as far as drinking and thoughts about sex., Since my first book about Fae/Fairies, all Need to say is that anything that comes next will have to work hard to surpass how much I actually loved this one. This was amazing! I loved that it was the standalone because I got everything I wanted for the story in a installment. No cliffhangers, no holding out for the next publication to come out. It wrapped upward so beautifully. Holly Black's writing style is great, the way she described everything, the plot range. Although the beginning was a little slow, the speed picks up as soon as we meet all the characters and the world, I mean I'm pleased to have pre-ordered this book because it was just so amazing. I loved the relationships that were built in the one. I loved Ben, I actually loved that he was gay and open about it, I loved that the author touched after this and how his story pans out. I actually mean its just amazing. I also loved Hazel, and how she is noticed in the book as almost being the woman who shacks up with everyone but then you know has her great ending. I actually mean I just really enjoyed this book. Absolutely recommend it., Holly Dark is back to her faerie roots, bringing us the best thing she's written because the Modern Faerie Adventure series. This stand-alone YA novel is dark and gritty, written like only Black can do. Yet it is also wonderful and whimsical every thing you can ask for in a faerie story. I came across myself smiling throughout the book, remembering what it was just like to be a child, running in in a bad neighborhood and blurring the lines between reality and make-believe.

" There's a monster within our wood. Your girl will get you if you're not good. Drag you under leaves and sticks. Penalize you for all your methods. A nest of curly hair and gnawed bone. You are never, ever coming... home. "

Hazel lives with her brother, Ben, in the strange town of Fairfold where humans and fae exist side by aspect. The faeries’ seemingly safe magic attracts tourists, but Hazel knows how dangerous they can be, and she knows how to stop them. Or she did, once.

In the middle of it all, there is a glass coffin in the woods. It rests right on the ground and in it sleeps a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointed as knives. Hazel and Ben were both in love with him as children. The boy has slept there for generations, never waking up.

Until one day, he does…, I really like Holly Dark, she's one of my favorite writers, therefore i was very excited to read this book. I loved the truth that it was standalone illusion plus the cover is so pretty! I experienced seen some mixed reviews on The Darkest Part of the Forest so I didn't have extremely high expectations. I concluded up liking this guide exactly how I thought I actually would.

The writing of this book is insane. There is hardly any books that I've read that can compare to the writing style of Holly Black. She gets such a way with words and it's so wonderful. I highly recommend checking out any of the woman books because she's so talented.

The characters are incredibly complex and well written and the story was so unique and faultless. I would compare The Darkest Part of the Forest to Between the Devil and the Strong Blue Sea by Apr Genevieve Tucholke, which is one if my favorite publications of all time. I actually just loved the story and plot so much.

The one thing that I actually think might have been better was the world building. This kills me to express it but there was very little world building and I actually still don't fully understand the world. At first I actually thought it was completely fantasy but things like iPods and Chapstick caught me off guard. I actually really wish there was better world building because I'm sure that the world that Holly created was beautiful.

Overall, I loved this book and would recommend it. The writing was out of this world and the characters were so beautiful. Bill is unquestionably a character which will stick with me for a long time. We would reread this book in a heartbeat and is actually jumped right to the top of my 2015 most favorite.
