Well written expression of who should be in and who should be out of the hall of popularity. jaffe males good fights based on stats and more. Unfortunately he left a few players off his should be in list that i think should be in. But almost every reader could have a favorite that they need in as well. MICKEY LOLICH!!!!!, The writer Jaffe's book is wonderful. It's the first publication that is so sincere evaluating sport figures. Their formate is easy and allows side by side analysis by position from one era to a different. I love discussing baseball with my friends and this text can make my arguments more powerful and much more balanced. A really great tool for all those hockey nuts like me., Well written and researched. More a book for true stat minds (which I am not), but nevertheless found it interesting, with good explanations of the newer baseball stats employed here--and why they are a good determine of a player's well worth., I've been reading what of Jay Jaffe since at least 2004 (he wrote for Baseball Prospectus's site and on their annual for many years; now he pens for Sports Illustrated). He was recently been writing about the Legendary book for the better part of 20 years. Mr. Jaffe created the JAWS system, a unique way of evaluating both the top and the whole career of every qualified player (10 year veteran). His ORAL CAVITY system is used throughout the industry, and is reported by writers throughout the baseball spectrum each December, January, and July when the Hall of Popularity receives its greatest attention. Like a rock band that worked on their first album for years, this is a surefire hockey hit.

Mr. Jaffe is able to incorporate some basic statistical analysis with a good narrative style along with some funny comments. The first hundred pages has a number of chapters that provide the history, methods, and insights about the hall of fame. The particular next three hundred pages are evaluations of players in the Hall of Fame and people that are currently eligible or will be eligible soon (Mr. Jaffe also makes the case for folks who have recently been unfairly passed over - Alan Trammel rates high on that list). Now i'm comfortable saying there are two great books on the baseball hall of fame: Bill James's " The Politics of Glory" and now " The particular Cooperstown Casebook. " If your chosen player didn't make the cut, Jaffe gladly points out it is because he hates that player, your team, and you.

* that last bit is a joke, but baseball writers get full with angry emails and comments about how exactly they hate that particular fans' team, This is not the type of book you sit down and keep reading a weekend break spree. To me, it was a good resource publication that I can use for many years to come. That can be a it tedious to read the credentials of all 317 current members of the Hall of Fame, but there are players who are spotlighted and generate argument. I especially enjoyed the chapters making the circumstance for players like Trammel, Grich, Minoso and Schilling. Many of Jaffe's measurements will shock you-Pie Traynor is the worst 3 rd baseman of those enshrined. Kiki Cuyler doesn't are supposed to be? Nor does Bill Mazerowski, Phil Rizzuto, Hack Wilson, Frankie Frisch, Joe Cronin and perhaps even Lou Brock, Andre Dawson, and Catfish Hunter. Gee, I got most of those guys on my all-star baseball game that you spun with their traditional stats over a card. I was swindled.
But besides from some good debates about the merits of players, you may be disheartened by the cronyism involved in voting, especially the various veterans' committees that voted for teammates or past employees, and the excess representation of players from the late 20's and especially the 30's from cronyism. However the new rules and expanding electorate to internet writers will cause a change in the way players are assessed in the future, whether it hasn't already begun in the last 3-years. Now the crux of Jaffe's thesis originates with his JAWS evaluation. He subjectively(not unreasonably) centers on a player's seven peak year WAR ideals to come up with their own JAWS metric for hall worthiness. He has three categories for each and every player; namely WAR, peak BATTLE, and the standard WAR for all players for a player's position. In that way, each player can be in comparison to every other player's WAR who played that position. So Jaffe even comes close players worthiness by player position. (Query whether that should be the circumstance or whether a player should be evaluated dependent on traditional statistics, current statistics, the total players in the HOF, and also the eye test). In any event, the terminology for the current metrics are explained and make for interesting comparative reading and debates. Worth the money as one book., Baseball connects (and transcends) decades thanks to its numbers. My grandfather could see Ted Williams hit and argue with his grandpa that he was the hitter than was Ty Cobb. So too can I see Mike Bass and hook up with my grandfather over my comparing him to Ted Williams. In his terrific publication " The Cooperstown Casebook", the wonderful " Sports Illustrated" writer Jay Jaffe connects past, present and future of our wonderful game and his data (and aesthetics) also connects fans generationally to those great (and near great) players. Within his expertise for the writing itself, Jaffe's sheer craft converts mere numbers and players into a Baseball Hall of Fame come still living in each page so easily turned. To be reconnected to the past and my grandfather's favorite players is such a surprise and Jay Jaffe's wonderful writing will hook up reader's to a game that lives eternally within the timeless magic of their players and their numbers.
