Trucking firm Schneider National caps drivers’ speed at 60 mph to save fuel

MILWAUKEE - One of the nation’s largest trucking companies is capping its drivers’ speeds at 60 mph, a move designed to save fuel and protect the environment.

Schneider National Inc. expects the change to save the company nearly 3.8 million gallons of diesel fuel a year. It also will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 40,000 tons, according to the Green Bay-based company. From the Star Tribune

This is all the buzz on WLW’s America’s Trucking Network with Bubba Bo tonight. Also, Con-way Truckload reduced the maximum speed for their trucks form 70 mph to 65 mph.

Vegetable oil fuels cars — and tax bills

Dave Eck, a Half Moon Bay mechanic, had attracted a media spotlight with his fleet of vehicles fueled by used fryer grease from a local chowder house. So when Sacramento called, he figured officials wanted advice on promoting alternative fuels.

Not at all. The government rang to notify Eck that he was a tax cheat. He was scolded for failing to get a “diesel fuel supplier’s license,” reporting quarterly how many gallons of grease he burns, and paying a tax on each gallon.

“All of a sudden they nailed me for a road tax,” said Eck, who drives a Hummer converted to run on vegetable oil. “I said, ‘Not a problem. I’ll do my part. But what do I get? At least let me into the carpool lane.’ ” More from the LA Times

Obviously our fuel problem is not “Big Oil”, but “Big Government”. Eck came up with a viable solution to the high cost of fuel and was immediately hit with Big Taxes!

UPDATE: Stolen truck found; booze still missing

CLAYTON - Police today found a transfer truck that was stolen last week. Still missing: its trailer with a cargo of booze.

The truck and trailer, containing hard liquor, was reported stolen from a lot behind Bojangles’ Restaurant off Shotwell Road.

A private citizen noticed the truck, which had been parked for several days near a business entrance close to the intersection of Interstate 40 and N.C. 210, Clayton police Capt. Jon Gerrell said today in a news release.

A Johnston sheriff’s deputy ran a check of its identification and realized that it was the stolen vehicle.

But the trailer containing the liquor was not attached and is still missing.

Gerrell said the alcohol was valued at $150,000 — not $500,000 as police originally thought.

The 2006 Volvo tractor-trailer bore a Cowan Systems company logo.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Clayton police at (919) 553-1570.

ATA Got Religion at the AlGore Church of Global Warming

The American Trucking Association has abandoned the American trucker they are theoretically representing and joined the AlGore Chuch of Global Warming. Their proposals to cut fuel consumption and “carbon dioxide emissions” are:

Limit the speed of new trucks to 68 mph and reduce the national speed limit to 65 mph for all vehicles.

Reduce engine idling.

Increase fuel efficiency through participation in an Environmental Protection Agency partnership program.

Ease congestion by improving the nation’s highways, through a fuel tax increase if necessary.

Use more productive truck combinations.

Support national fuel-economy standards for trucks.

They apparently cannot get anyone in Washington to back their plan to reduce the speed limit. The ATA has not learned from past history and are doomed to repeat it. We’ve been there, done that.
