Crash probe focuses on driver’s log book: source

Chicago Police were still investigating Saturday the cause of a Friday rush-hour accident in which a semi-tractor trailer plowed into the Cermak/Chinatown CTA L station, killing two women and injuring 21 other people.

And the truck driver, Don Wells, 51, was still being questioned by police late Saturday but had not been charged.

Killed were Elosia Guerrero, 47, and Delisia Brown, 18.

By Saturday, the last of the injured had been released from area hospitals.

According to sources, police planned to review the log book of the truck driver — who has declined to take a urine test — in an effort to determine if he was taking drugs to stay awake.

The truck came barreling down a Dan Ryan Expy. exit ramp during Friday’s rush hour, crashing into the bus stop outside the L station, then into the station’s escalator.

Chicago Police are reviewing CTA video surveillance, as well as asking anyone with information regarding the accident to contact the Major Accidents Investigation Unit at (312) 745-4521. More from the Chicago Sun Times

According to the article, Wells, a driver for Whiteline Express, did not show signs of alcohol. Authorities are looking into Wells’ log book to see if he was in violation of hours of service rules.

As times get tougher, thieves get going (SC)

On April 9, a trucker called county deputies after he noticed a hose pipe hanging out of his fuel tank. A thief had apparently stolen the fuel from his truck while he slept.

Parked at a Bowman truck stop, the trucker said that around 1:10 a.m., he woke up and noticed his fuel gauges read a lot lower than before he went to bed. Someone had used the hose to siphon diesel from his tanks, according to an Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

The man told police the gas thief then sped away in a black Peterbilt tractor-trailer after taking about 100 gallons.

With gas prices climbing daily further north of $3 a gallon, law enforcement officials say the Indiana trucker’s story may not be the last. More from TandD.com

Diesel fuel theft is increasing. As fuel goes beyong $4 per gallon, a locking fuel cap is a good investment.

On the eve of Halloween, October 30, 1938, Orson Wells and his Mercury Theater On The Air scared the pants off of tens of thousands of radio listeners with his adaptation of H. G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds. Mercury Theater’s “way of jumping out from behind a bush and saying boo,” coming on the heals of Hitler’s declared war on Europe, threw am already nervous nation into a panic in thinking that our civilization was threatened with extinction.

Dorothy Thompson, a columnist for the New York Tribune, observed that the production demonstrated how mass media could be used to manipulate the public with these words:

“All unwittingly, Mr. Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater of the Air have made one of the most fascinating and important demonstrations of all time,” she wrote. “They have proved that a few effective voices, accompanied by sound effects, can convince masses of people of a totally unreasonable, completely fantastic proposition as to create a nation-wide panic. Why Should Conservatives Be Loyal to Maverick McCain’s Ego?

A message from John Bootie - Independent candidate for President and fellow trucker:

That one is easy, we should NEVER displace our morals and values for anyone we can’t truly vote for. If their not expounding our morals and values now, they won’t worry about US after they get in office.

President Bush wasn’t perfect but he did some good. But if we remember back in ‘99 and ‘00 he was portrayed as a compassionate conservative. He showed us what that means, when it came to border security and spending, didn’t he?

Let’s not get duped by the media again! We have several truly good Independents running, but NO ONE is willing to give them a real chance or helping hand. NO VOTE is ever wasted unless it’s not cast.

I won’t support the likes of John McCain. He’s NO better than: Barack Hussein Obama, or Hillary Diane Clinton. And putting your head in the sand or holding your nose and voting for a person who DOES NOT hold your values will come back to haunt you.
